1. Making plans
Alexander Gerst has a great perspective from the station to view the world, it looks like he's begun making a list of places to go visit once he lands (I probably would to!).
2. Phi Week
The European Space Agency held a conference this week celebrating new technologies and practices involved in satellite Earth observations. This conference showcased many of the new technologies as well as an opening of the new "Data Visualization Center" in Italy that will help community scientists see the work they are contributing to everyday. Many cool things happened so go check out the video!
3. Cimon
The crew just got a little bit bigger, the crew on the station just welcomed CIMON to the international space station. CIMON is known as Crew Interactive Mobile CompanioN, it was 3D printed and uses artificial intelligence software by IBM watson. CIMON was developed by Airbus in partnership with the Germany Space Agency (DLR) it was designed to test human-machine interaction in space. CIMON is equipped with many abilities including seeing, hearing and understanding what it observes allowing it to issue voice commands similar to how siri and alexa work. CIMON was installed in the Columbus laboratory and will assist on experiments and recording data for future experiments.
4. 3, 2, 1 Blast off!
Russia launched the cygnus cargo ship to the international space station. Unlike flying an airplane a little rain will usually delay a launch. Since we are always at the beck and call of mother nature they had to delay the launch from it's scheduled date.
5. The countdown has begun!
If you are unfamiliar with the InSights mission you need to catch up! We are closing in on InSights approaching mars and will be landing within the next few weeks! This is the first landing on mars since 2016 when the Schiaparelli EDM lander was a partial failure when it crashed during landing but was still deemed successful because critical data was still retrieved.
